When An Anime Is Made to Be Generic On Purpose
Shangri-La Frontier is definitely not what you expect on the surface, and there's a good reason for that. The premise of the anime makes it feel like you're watching something you've seen many times before, sharing much in common with Isekai, but that ends up being the point. Shangri-La Frontier is trying to do something different from its video game anime counterparts by leaning into what makes this subgenre itself shine.

Ahhh yes the kind of anime i relate to Decade ago when i was in high school i have this girl i like, im graduating she's in 2nd year. We totally had a bonding back then and i can say that we both like each other but here's the twist. Her father wants her to finish school first then have a job then after at that certain point only she can chase after someone or even date a guy. She couldn't neglect her father for that sole reason, but me im true to myself i can't wait for her in that longtime investing to much not even knowing if she'll pick me or she'll have a change of heart. So 3 months before i graduate in highschool i confessed to her and i don't even know if she's scared to lose me or she doesn't want to anger her father but when i heard the word she said that day " I can't " those two words woke the fuck me up like its a ring call to wake up and it's time to call it stop and all i can say was " Ahh is that so" then i turn to leave her. I walked home after that not knowing i left my bicycle at the parking yard. Since that day i couldn't face her knowing i threw that relationship that we had and i have a salty toxic mind back then cause all that runs in my mind was she doesn't deserve me. Even after graduation up till now i don't have any news about her. Up to this day i didn't chase anyone even on college cause i feel like i got this feeling of "i don't wanna get hurt again like that". Im 26 and i still live with my parents cause i don't even know if i'll grow out of my shell to find someone or even have a family.

finally somebody appreciate my boy ! His kindness towards demons actually make sense because his sister turned Into a demon , tried to eat him , but somehow … able to regain her humanity after he freed her from Muzan by calling out her humanity And I feel like that’s why he sees demons differently than most Hashiras , because deep inside he wants all the demons to become like his sister , he see them as tragic beings rather than monsters because it happened to his own family ! His mirror is Sanemi . Who is hostile because his own mother was turned , didn’t retain her humanity and tried to eat him . In order to protect his family he had to kill his mother . Which made him very aggressive and hostile even to demons that are good. Sanemi is basically what Tanjiro could become if Nezuko didn’t break free and try’s to kill him Tanjiro , sees demons as worthy of redemption because his sister got turned and able to control herself . He He sees hope in demons while Sanemi , who’s mothers got turned seems demons are irredeemable because his mother was not able to break free and returned her humanity. There is a reason that why he is the most hostile asshole Eventhough almost all Hashira family was destroyed by demons , because he had to kill his mother . Shows that we are actually shaped by our experiences . Tanjiro is kind because he is surrounded by kindness, and able to spread kindness towards others . He is not just kind to be kind .

I did really enjoy this anime on the whole but i found the ending really unsatifying. It was just so vaugue & left pretty much every story thread up in the air & unfinished which does often seem to be the japanese way unfortunately. I felt having invested so much time to watch al 47 episodes it was a shame the ending was so meh.

I'm right in the middle of Nana. I'm almost thirty-four and did most of my anime watches right out of high school. Some during middle/high school, with friends. I can see the cast's complicated motives as rather true to life (in what's driving them internally, not what they're aiming at/dreams externally), and appropriately dramatic for them being so young (but not in middle/high school, which is feeling more old-hat by the day). Anime that drive the age further forward start to clash with some of the limits of the format-older characters living more realistic lives can be hard to do in such a visually emotive style without it feeling like a slice of life w/ spikes of deep catharsis instead of woven mini-arcs nested inside a main throughline like Nana does so well. I simply can't see myself as easily in middle or high school characters, not in the ways that're artistically cathartic for middlescence (after youngest adulthood, before senility), bc this is such a protracted "arc" of my life Nana can be enjoyed & found thought-provoking by both young adults & "middlescents", probably even by middle schoolers though they'd likely have trouble accepting the downfalls of the characters as just regular part of life even if dramatized. I don't consider myself otaku anymore-i was never sufficiently into fiction instead of non-fiction-but this one's really touching my heart and resetting my perspective in ways that normally only non-fiction/social studies can accomplish Girls' Last Tour is doing the same thing bc the characters' ages cease to matter in the absurd scenario. Bartender is another one full of older characters. Older than Nana's characters even. You get little slices of lives, dreams, fears, hopes, of each bar patron Ideally, being into anime as a youth should steel your resolve for finding your way in life, but without seinen & josei (older characters or written for older ppl) to give perspective on setbacks or even outright death of dreams ("dreams deferred" as well), you get main character syndrome a lot of the time, which seems like the opposite of the summed effects that Japanese authors are trying to impart. It does hit differently when you're in an extremely individualistic country-the drive and individuality explored even in shojo & shonen is implicitly shown to Japanese audiences as a corrective for status quo social issues, that don't apply (in terms of healthy individuality with the reality that you're always on someone else's supply/support/beckoning) as readily to U.S. audiences where I'm from bc wish-fulfillment mixed with already excessive individualism can lead ppl to miss the point. Nana is a great bridge to check into how younger anime has affected you in terms of perspective, for the reasons i just mentioned. I think Nana's actually more josei, but can still reach shojo audiences with discretion.

I just binged the manga of this; my way in was similar to yours in that what hooked me initially was finding it to bee really similar to Ender's Game (a formative novel in my youth; but basically kids training in intense competitions to fight alien invaders and relying on a lot of lateral thinking to win)... while I agree with the large cast of characters being compelling, I disagree with them being memorable. You can only retain them during a binge... I'm really sad that when / if I try to pick this up in a year-or-two after more arcs have completed... I probably will have no clue who 90% the characters are without a re-read.
